Daniel Heinrich, WRIT 340, 1-WHO YOU ARE MATTERS

Describe where you come from

I am from a small home in Long Beach. But my home has never felt small to me. Before coming to USC, I lived with my two parents, 3 dogs, and one cat; I do not have any siblings.

Tell me where you're going

I am going to live in Los Angeles after college, hopefully near Cheviot Hills. I would enjoy living near a golf course. I have family in West Los Angeles, and family is important to me. I would also like to travel more, maybe Egypt and Germany since I am learning to speak German.

Tell me how you plan to get there

In short: time, work, money. I would like to work in Los Angeles after college. I plan on working in public accounting and starting my career in financial services assurance. After earning my CPA, I plan to transition to mergers & acquisitions. Hopefully I can earn enough income to purchase a nice home near L.A.

How are you LIKE your parents

I consider myself to be very diligent, which I can attribute to my father. Both my mother and I enjoy nature, such as going to the beach and taking hikes. She and I also share a similar sense of humor. I suppose my father is more of an introvert and my mother an extrovert; I feel as if I picked up a bit of both.

How are you UNLIKE your parents

I am more of a risk taker than my parents. I would also say I am more open to new experiences and ideas. My parents seem to very rarely deviate from their standard routine.

Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?

I would say I am operating under someone else’s expectations, but not one person in particular. I feel like my environment and society directed me down a certain path and caused me to develop certain expectations. I like the path that I am on, and feel it may be a good path all things considered.

Who serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a person who I have very much respect for, as well as for his pursuits in fitness, film, and politics. I appreciate his commitment to his work. I can recognize that his passion and sense of personal responsibility have contributed to his success. His involvement with USC is also very interesting.

Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?

A lion, however sometimes I guess I relate more to a fox. I suppose because lions often seem unbothered by things that are immaterial, but put their energy into things they consider important.

Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.

When I was 12 my family and I visited the Redwood National Park and had a chance to stand inside of a hollow Redwood tree. I remember thinking of how small I felt in there.

  1. Okay please tell me what the names of your dogs and cats are. I'm super jealous of your pets. Also Cheviot Hills is an INCREDIBLE neighborhood. I worked there this summer and used to run around the golf course, I can see why you would like it so much.

It's interesting that you picked up both of your mom's extroverted side and your dad's introverted side. You should take your Myers Briggs Personality Test to see if you are extroverted or introverted. Keep us posted that.

  2. Claire: I wish I had no sibling and only pets. Would have saved me a lot of hassle and brought a greater joy into my life.

  3. I really like your plan on how to get to where you are going! You definitely have it a lot more thought out than I do.

I cannot relate more to being more of a risk taker than your parents. It is definitely frustrating at times having to convince them you are not going to die if you do something.

  4. Hi,

I agree with you that it would be very nice to live next to a golf course. In the past year or so I have re-picked up golf and it would be so nice to chip around on a course at dawn and dusk.

I hope you're able to achieve your dream and also being able to travel.

  5. I really like that you plan to enter the field of accounting. I can't wait to tell of you of all the benefits accounting in any of the Big 4 or perhaps even midtier firms have to offer.

Tip #1: If you pass your CPA exam within the first year in any of the Big 4 firms, you will receive a bonus of $5,000. Hopefully, you can add that to your savings account to buy a house in LA.

Reach out to me if you need help with reaching out to recruiters! I was just in your shoes about a year ago!

  6. I appreciate how you explained that you related to a lion, because I responded the same animal with similar reasons. Additionally, I really like how planned out you have your next few steps, as well as your clear goals for the future. I don't have much of a plan at all so it's quite nice to see that some people do. I spent some time on golf courses when I was younger, a sport that I didn't continue unfortunately, but I recognize exactly why you'd want to be close to one, as they always brought me joy and a bit of calm.

  7. Very well written and extensive. Glad to see that you share my passion of golf and traveling! Given the increasing consolidation in a multitude of sectors, working in M&A is certainly an exciting choice of profession.

Like you, I consider myself to be more of a risk-taker than my parents as well !
